What will the Dallas Mavericks do with the 10th-overall pick? | News Article by handicapperchic.com

The Dallas Mavericks are entering one of the most important offseason in recent franchise history. The grumblings that Luka Doncic may be unhappy with his team grow louder with each passing day and another losing season in his prime might just send the Slovenian superstar to another squad, one more equipped for him to lead to title contention.

There were two good things that came from the Mavericks 2022-2023 campaign: their trade for Kyrie Irving and their tanking in the last week of the season in order to land the 10th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

With Irving’s bird rights, the Mavs can now retain Kyrie to keep their superstar backcourt intact and can work out rounding out the roster around their two stars without worry of Irving leaving in free agency.

After all, Dallas does have the ability to give Kai his best possible contract. The 10th overall pick gives Dallas the opportunity to either add a lottery-level talent on a rookie-scale deal or to include it in a trade to bring in additional veteran talent around Doncic and Irving.

10th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft

  • Dereck Lively
  • Olivier-Maxence Prosper
  • Richaun Holmes
  • Shedding David Bertans salary
  • Opening up the mid-level extension

With the way that the Mavericks have historically operated as a franchise, it’s more likely that Dallas trades the pick for an established NBA talent rather than take their chances in the crapshoot that is the NBA Draft.

The 10th pick does carry a significant amount of trade weight, especially with a deeper class like 2023’s. If that’s the route, the Mavericks should be able to acquire a pretty meaningful third wheel to put next to Doncic and Irving.

But they have plenty of different options if they were to keep the pick as well. For example, the Mavs could go with a safe pick and spend their selection on a prospect who they know could contribute right away, even if they don’t have the highest ceiling.

Gradey Dick out of the University of Kansas would be a perfect fit as an off-ball scorer and connector alongside Doncic and Irving and could very well be available by the time the 10th pick rolls around.

Dallas could also go for the homerun play and use their selection on a player who analysts expect to be a project but has overwhelming star potential. Someone along the lines of Taylor Hendricks or Bilal Coulibaly could potentially contribute right away as a 3-and-D archetype, but both have the ceiling to grow into a true star as well.
