The Minnesota Vikings have gone ahead and released star running back, Dalvin Cook, after failing to find a trade partner for him and he is now free to sign with any team that he chooses.
As the odds currently sit, the Miami Dolphins are the heavy favorites to land Cook with -300 odds and they are followed by the New York Jets ( 350), Buffalo Bills ( 600), Cincinnati Bengals ( 1000), Dallas Cowboys ( 1100), Chicago Bears ( 1400), San Francisco 49ers ( 1600), and New England Patriots ( 1600).
The Miami Dolphins are heavily favored and rightfully so after Cook hinted on social media that this is his preferred destination by posting a picture of himself inside Hard Rock where the Dolphins play. Cook is also a native of Miami as he played at Miami Central high school before playing at Florida State where he thrived in games against Miami.
While the New York Jets have the second shortest odds, it doesn’t seem likely that he ends up in New York. The Jets were delighted by the production that Breece Hall and Michael Carter put in for them and would not want to ruin their young core by forcing Dalvin into the rotation.
Buffalo could make a surprise push at Cook being that they run a heavy ground game each week that was top 10 in both rushing attempts and rushing yards per game last season. Also, Cook’s younger brother, James Cook is also a running back for the Bills which could incentivize him to sign there even more.
The Bengals could be a darkhorse team to sign Cook being that their current RB1 is dealing with off-field legal issues and could be the next veteran running back cut from the team. Cincy would desperately try and fill the hole if they cut Mixon and Cook would slide right into the RB1 duties and guarantee himself playing time.
Cook going to Dallas just doesn’t make sense. The Cowboys cut Zeke Elliott to make room for Tony Pollard’s development as RB1 and adding Cook would certainly put a damper on things as they’d be forced to play Cook which could cut into Pollard’s improvement.

He could also see himself staying in the division and join the Chicago Bears who are also in need of an RB1 after losing David Montgomery to the Detroit Lions. The Bears offense though wouldn’t necessarily need Dalvin to line up in the backfield being that Justin Fields takes up most of the rushing attempts anyways.
Both the 49ers and Patriots would not fit Dalvin’s style of play which is why they have the longest odds of landing him. The 49ers are content with CMC leading the way and wouldn’t want to fix what isn’t broken while the Patriots like to run a 3-man committee which wouldn’t guarantee any playing time for Cook.
