In the span of one season, the Detroit Pistons have seemingly fallen out of the public eye, even for those who take a special liking to young, rebuilding teams.
Despite the immense amount of young talent they have on the roster, Cade Cunningham’s season-ending injury last year took all of the interest away from the Pistons and dispersed them throughout the rest of the prospective squads in the league, such as the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic.
Even without Cunningham, Detroit had plenty of intriguing young talent to offer last season, such as Killian Hayes and his new path to becoming an NBA veteran, top-four pick Jaden Ivey, and rookie phenom Jalen Duren. Not to mention their less proven young players such as Marvin Bagley III, Isaiah Stewart, and James Wiseman.
Now, though, with Cade Cunningham returning from injury and looking stellar in his offseason runs in training camp with the United States National Team, the Detroit Pistons are ready to put the league on notice again. With Cade back, the Pistons have nearly a full lineup of high-ceiling prospects that should make them a League Pass fixture for any fan searching for the next stars in the NBA.
Between Cade, Ivey, 2023 fifth-overall pick Ausar Thompson, Isaiah Stewart, Jalen Duren, James Wiseman, Killian Hayes, and Marvin Bagley III, Detroit has plenty of talent to offer. Not only should they be an exciting young team, they could outperform expectations, as well.

This belief is also upheld by the front office, who made moves to further increase the potential competitiveness of this squad as early as this upcoming season. Flanked by veterans such as Bojan Bogdanovic, Joe Harris, and Alec Burks, the Pistons could realistically make some noise in the Eastern Conference next year, and it wouldn’t be unbelievable if they found themselves in the race for one of the Play-In Tournament spots down the stretch.

While internal improvement from players such as Duren, Ivey, and Hayes will be paramount to the success of this group, as well as the impact that Ausar Thompson can have in his rookie season, the hopes of the Pistons rests on the shoulders of one single player: Cade Cunningham.
If Detroit were to sneak there way into the postseason, or at least pose a threat to do so, it’ll be because of Cade’s performance in his third year. If the league and its fans finally start paying attention to what’s been brewing with the Pistons, it’ll be because of Cade Cunningham.
