The PGA tour heads into their final full-field event before the FedEx Cup playoffs kick off. There are just 70 spots up for grabs at the 2023 FedExCup Playoffs, down from the usual 125. That leaves quite a few notable names outside of the bubble, some of them with respectable seasons, however, it take more than just a respectable season to make the playoffs anymore.
Some players will be fighting for the playoffs this week at the Wyndham Championship, others fighting for their playing status, and some just trying to pad their FedExCup totals in hopes of making a deep postseason run to East Lake.
The most notable player potentially the most on the line in this tournament, is without a doubt, Justin Thomas. He has been struggling mightily for the past couple of months, and even tried to get some more points last week at the 3M but missed the cut again.
He is currently in 79th place in the FedEx cup standings. He will need a T18 or better to make the field next week. He hasn’t played here since 2016, and when he has he hasn’t played well ( T-78, T-56, and MC).
Sedgefield Country Club is the host for this edition of the Wyndham. The Donald Ross design has been the site of this championship since 2008. The Par-70 layout plays just 7,130 yards. The tight fairways, doglegs, and the staple of a Ross, the undulating greens.
The course doesn’t really challenge these guys, as the winning scores have fallen in the 20-22 under range. The Bermuda grass rough is no joke and as is typical, long is dead at a Ross design.

There are not many of the top 20 players in the world in this field, as most of the FedEx cup locks are taking this week off. In the field is Sungjae Im who seems to play every week. Also trying to make the next playoffs is Adam Scott.
He is sitting at 81. He will need a solid weekend here to make the playoffs as well. Looking at the rest of the field, Ludvig Aberg stands out as someone who could finally make some noise. If a great performance, he may get himself on the European Ryder Cup team.
Next week’s Wyndham Championship is the 44th and final event of the FedExCup Regular Season.
