The Los Angeles Rams travel upstate to take on the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of 2022’s earlier NFC Championship game.
The Rams edged that one out behind some inspired play from Quarterback Matthew Stafford and his favorite target Cooper Kupp.
They also needed a stinker from 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, though, and he disappointingly obliged.
That lackluster performance to end their postseason led the Niners and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan to give the starting nod to second-year Quarterback Trey Lance to begin the season.
Now, with Lance sidelined from a season-ending ankle fracture, Garoppolo has another nearly full season to prove that he can be a winning quarterback, and he’ll get an early chance to prove that he can beat the team that kept him out of a second Super Bowl appearance on Monday.
So far, after taking over for Lance as the starter last week against the Denver Broncos, Jimmy GQ has done little to prove that he’ll be any better than he’s shown throughout his career.
In Mile High Stadium, he could only lead the Niners to a measly 10 points and tossed an interception to offset the lone touchdown he threw. Now, he’s set to face off against an equally stacked defense that still features one of the greatest talents to ever grace the defensive side of the football in Defensive Lineman Aaron Donald.
The Rams have quickly shaken off their Super Bowl hangover after suffering a blowout loss at home at the hands of the Buffalo Bills to open their season.
Stafford has looked a little rusty since winning his first championship but has started to heat up week to week as he builds chemistry with his new targets — including All-Pro wideout Allen Robinson.
LA has gotten off to a 2-1 start behind their strong defense that has given up an average of just 23.3 points per game against a slate that featured Josh Allen and the Bills, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Arizona Cardinals.
The Rams and Head Coach Sean McVay know that the offense will have to be better if they’re to repeat as champions this season. Stafford, AR-15, Cooper Kupp, and the rest of the LA attack will get a strong litmus test for the ceiling of this unit as they take on one of the most solid defenses of the past decade in the 49ers.
